Programme 2026

MUSIC & TRADITION

In 2026, our Christmas market on Mirabellplatz in Salzburg will once again be accompanied by a lovingly selected programme of events.

Enjoy atmospheric Advent music in front of the palace, listen to festive brass music and experience living traditions – from the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree to the visit of St. Nicholas & Krampus – a horned, fur-clad figure from Alpine folklore who accompanies St. Nicholas – who surprise our young guests with sweets.

These special moments make our Advent market in Salzburg a place to pause and marvel – and bring back the true Christmas spirit in Salzburg.

Our programme for 2026 is currently being planned – as soon as it is confirmed, you will find it here:

ALTGNIGLER KRAMPUSSE & PERCHTEN

St. Nicholas and Krampus are an integral part of Austrian tradition and simply belong to the Advent season. While St. Nicholas stands for the good, the Krampusse and Perchten (fur-clad, masked figures from Alpine winter folklore) with their fearsome masks recall old traditions and legends.

The Altgnigler Krampus & Perchten Pass (a local Krampus group from Salzburg-Gnigl) is a fixture of our Christmas market on Mirabellplatz every year and parades across the market together with St. Nicholas.

While St. Nicholas hands out sweets to the children, the Krampusse take care – with a wink – of the “big children” who may not have been quite so well-behaved over the past year.

A special highlight for the whole family!

BÜRMOOSER BLECHBLÄSER

The Bürmooser Blechbläser, a brass ensemble from Bürmoos near Salzburg, are regular guests at our Christmas market on Mirabellplatz during Advent, creating a true pre-Christmas atmosphere with their music.

With cheerful and contemplative Christmas pieces, they continue a long tradition dating back to the interwar period, when musicians played for farmers during Advent in return for small gifts.

Under the direction of Christina Stöger, the ensemble today performs at numerous church, public and private occasions – and also brings festive anticipation and Advent spirit to our market.

WEISENBLÄSER DER POSTMUSIK SALZBURG

The Weisenbläser der Postmusik Salzburg – wind players performing traditional Alpine melodies, known as Weisen – can be heard at various markets during Advent and also enchant visitors at our Mirabell Christmas Market with their atmospheric music.

Their repertoire ranges from traditional Alpine melodies and well-known Christmas carols to modern festive pieces – a musical tradition that originated in the Christmas music played at post offices.

The experienced musicians, under the direction of Josef Harl, create a warm, festive atmosphere wherever they play and invite young and old to enjoy the Advent season with music.

The History of the Salzburg Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz

The Christmas market in Salzburg looks back on a long tradition and was first mentioned in 1491 as the “Tandlmarkt” (a market for trinkets and small wares). Alongside this Tandlmarkt, a proper pre-Christmas market soon emerged, which appears in records from the 17th century as the “Nikolaimarkt” (St. Nicholas Market).

The first Christkindlmarkt – the Austrian name for a traditional Christmas market – after the end of the Second World War took place on Mirabellplatz.

In 1990, the market was revived and became an insider tip among Salzburg’s Advent markets. With its atmospheric flair, hand-picked exhibitors and the romantic backdrop of Mirabell Palace, it has delighted visitors from near and far ever since.

A place where craftsmanship, culinary delights and warm hospitality come together – and where Christmas can truly be felt.
