Our Salzburg Christmas market at Mirabellplatz is level and right by the trolleybus (Obus) stop, which makes it easy with a pushchair (stroller), wheelchair or rollator (walker). If you want to visit the Salzburg Christmas market with your dog, you’re right to ask what applies in 2026, because the City of Salzburg is currently changing its market regulations. Here’s what we know about the rules for dogs and what you should pack.

Are dogs allowed at the Christmas market at Mirabellplatz? Yes, on a lead (leash) and wearing a muzzle (Austrian German: Beißkorb) – that’s what the City of Salzburg’s new market regulations provide for, which are due to apply from 1 November 2026. So pack both (Beißkorb is the Austrian word for a muzzle). With a pushchair or wheelchair, you can reach the level market directly from the trolleybus stop.

You’ll find opening hours and directions further down.

Salzburg Christmas market with a dog: bring a lead and a muzzle

Dogs are welcome to come with you to Mirabellplatz. The City of Salzburg has introduced new market regulations that are due to apply to our Christmas market too from 1 November 2026: dogs will then be allowed on the markets on a lead and wearing a muzzle (more in the next section). So bring a lead and a muzzle.

Between the huts, a short, fixed lead works better than a retractable one.

What applies to dogs in Salzburg in 2026

Two rules work together:

  • Throughout the city: according to the City of Salzburg’s dog-keeping regulations (Hundehalteverordnung), dogs outdoors must either be kept on a lead, so that you have them under control at all times, or wear a muzzle.
  • On the city’s markets: the city senate (Stadtsenat) approved new market regulations on 5 October 2026, and according to the city’s press release they state that dogs will in future be allowed on the markets on a lead and wearing a muzzle. The Christmas market at Mirabellplatz is named there explicitly. The city council (Gemeinderat) had the market regulations on its agenda on 21 October 2026, and according to the city they are due to come into force on 1 November 2026 (as of 26 October 2026).

As soon as the new market regulations have been officially published, we’ll add that here. With a lead and a muzzle, you’re on the safe side either way.

Relaxed with your dog at the market

A Christmas market is a lot at once for many dogs: people, smells, music. A few things help:

  • Choose quieter times: on Wednesday 25 November (tree lighting) and Wednesday 2 December (St. Nicholas and Krampus – a horned, fur-clad figure from Alpine folklore who accompanies St. Nicholas), there’s a programme in front of the palace at 6 pm, with music and lots of people. With a dog, you’re better off coming on another day.
  • Watch the ground: dropped sweets such as chocolate or raisins are poisonous for dogs, and Glühwein (hot mulled wine, spiced with cinnamon, cloves and orange) is off limits too.
  • Take breaks: if your dog gets restless, go for a short walk away from the huts in between.
  • Think about the cold: how cold it gets in Salzburg in December is in our article on Salzburg weather in December.

With a pushchair at the Christmas market

The whole market area at Mirabellplatz is level and easy to get around with a pushchair. The Mirabellplatz trolleybus stop is right by the market, served by lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. According to Salzburg Tourism, Salzburg’s trolleybuses are mostly low-floor buses.

From the main station, it’s about a 10 to 15 minute walk, or a few stops by trolleybus. How that works exactly is in our article By train to the Salzburg Christmas market.

If you’re visiting the Salzburg Christmas market with kids, there are two special evenings: the lighting of the Christmas tree on Wednesday 25 November 2026, and St. Nicholas and Krampus on Wednesday 2 December 2026, both at 6 pm. On these evenings the square is busier than usual. If you want to be there with a pushchair, allow a few extra minutes and arrive a little before 6 pm.

By wheelchair: level paths, trolleybus with ramp, accessible toilet

With a wheelchair or rollator, too, you can reach all the huts without steps. These points help with planning:

  • Trolleybus: according to Salzburg Tourism, the buses are mostly accessible, and the driver folds out the ramp if needed. In the Salzburgmobil app, accessible journeys are marked with a wheelchair symbol.
  • Toilet: there’s an accessible toilet in the “Vogelhaus” public toilets in the Mirabell Gardens (Mirabellgarten) right next to the market. According to Salzburg Tourism, it can be used with a Euro-Key (the European key for accessible toilets) and during the Christkindlmarkt – the Austrian name for a traditional Christmas market – season it’s open Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 9.50 pm and on Sundays and public holidays from 7 am to 8 pm (for a fee).
  • Parking: there are no disabled parking spaces in the Mirabell-Congress-Garage (underground car park next to Mirabellplatz) right on the square. There are spaces in the Linzer Gasse and Paracelsusbad car parks, and with a disabled parking badge under § 29b of the Austrian Road Traffic Act (StVO) you can park free of charge in the short-term parking zone (Kurzparkzone). Everything about parking is in our article on parking at Mirabellplatz.

An accessible Advent: the city’s programme at Mirabellplatz

In 2025, the City of Salzburg organised an inclusive Advent programme here with us at Mirabellplatz, on Tuesdays from 4 pm: a St. Nicholas in a wheelchair (Rolli-Nikolaus), a blind rally (Blindenrallye) and a choir singing Christmas carols in sign language. All events were accessible and needed no registration. The dates for 2026 haven’t been published yet; we’ll add them to our programme as soon as they’re confirmed.
