“Where can I see The Sound of Music here?” is a question guests often ask us at the Salzburg Christmas market at Mirabellplatz (Mirabell Square). The answer is just around the corner: in Advent 2026 the Salzburger Landestheater (Salzburg State Theatre) stages the Sound of Music musical in Salzburg from 18 December, and on 28 December the Salzburg Marionette Theatre next door performs its version in English. From our huts you can walk to either theatre in about 5 minutes.
Where can you see The Sound of Music musical in Salzburg? In Advent 2026 the Salzburger Landestheater at Schwarzstraße 22 performs the musical in German, according to the theatre on four evenings between 18 and 28 December. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre at Schwarzstraße 24 shows a version in English on 28 December. Both theatres are about a 5-minute walk from Mirabellplatz.

Where to see the Sound of Music musical in Salzburg
Two stages in the city tell the story of the von Trapp family, and they sit side by side on Schwarzstraße by the Salzach river, on the same side of the river as our market:
- Salzburger Landestheater, Schwarzstraße 22: the musical with singers and orchestra, directed by Andreas Gergen and Christian Struppeck. The Landestheater recommends it for ages 10 and up.
- Salzburg Marionette Theatre, Schwarzstraße 24: a puppet show with marionettes; according to Salzburg Tourism, the music and voices come from a recording with Broadway singers. The theatre says it runs 1 hour 45 minutes including an interval.
What the film changes compared with the real story of the von Trapp family is in our article The real von Trapp family: the true story.

Is it in German or English?
The Landestheater performs in German, the Marionette Theatre in English:
- Landestheater: the musical is sung and spoken in German, in the translation by Heiko Wohlgemuth and Kevin Schroeder. Whether there will be English surtitles this season isn’t currently stated on the theatre’s website. It’s best to ask the box office before you buy tickets.
- Marionette Theatre: the version is in English, with explanations in German, Italian, French, Spanish and Japanese.
According to the Landestheater, there’s an introductory talk before every performance, held twice: 45 and 30 minutes before curtain-up.
From Mirabellplatz to the theatre: about a 5-minute walk
From our market in front of Schloss Mirabell (Mirabell Palace) it’s about 400 to 450 metres, a good 5 minutes on foot:
- From the market, cross Mirabellplatz heading south, towards Makartplatz.
- Walk past the Hotel Bristol onto Makartplatz.
- From Makartplatz, carry on to Schwarzstraße by the Salzach: first you reach the Landestheater (no. 22), and a few steps further on the Marionette Theatre (no. 24).
Going through Mirabell Gardens doesn’t make the walk any shorter, and in winter parts of the gardens are closed. In the evening it’s better to take the route via Makartplatz. Around Makartplatz and Schwarzstraße, the City of Salzburg is working on utility lines and sewers until probably the end of 2026. According to the city, you can get through on foot, and access to the Landestheater stays open (as of 29 October 2026). If you come by bus, get off at Makartplatz; the stop is right by the Landestheater.
