Christl-Alm

Bauernkrapfen, Pofesen & Glühwein · the Neureiter family from St. Koloman

Grandma's Bauernkrapfen, made fresh on site

In the Christl-Alm hut, “Grandma's Bauernkrapfen (traditional fried dough pastries) and other delicious specialities are still prepared on site with lots of love, just like in the old days”. There's also homemade Glühwein (hot mulled wine) made “to Grandpa Sepp's old secret recipe”. Behind it all are Josef and Florian Neureiter from St. Koloman, and for more than 35 years the family has been a fixture of the Christmas market at Mirabellplatz.

What you’ll find here

  • Grandma's Bauernkrapfen, made fresh on site
  • Pofesen (fried bread slices filled with plum jam)
  • Apfelradeln (apple rings fried in batter)
  • Homemade Glühwein to Grandpa Sepp's secret recipe
  • Glühmost (hot spiced cider)
  • Kinderpunsch (alcohol-free punch for children)

The family relies on regional ingredients and traditional recipes. “Charming. Warm-hearted. Genuine.” That's how the Neureiter family describes its hut.

Beyond the market

The hut takes its name from the Christl-Alm on the Trattberg in St. Koloman, around 30 kilometres south of Salzburg. This alpine pasture lies on a high plateau at 1,500 metres and can be reached via a nine-kilometre panoramic road. In summer, around 370 calves and 80 horses graze on the 602-hectare high pasture. Until 1998, the Christl-Alm was run purely as a farmers' pasture; in 2006, Salzburger Land Tourismus awarded it the “Salzburger Almsommer” label.

Sepp and Beatrix Neureiter took over the Alm from Sepp's mother in 1987. From the end of May to the end of October, they serve Salzburg home cooking there, and Sepp plays the Steirische Harmonika (a traditional button accordion) to go with it. During Advent, you'll find the family with us at Mirabellplatz.
