When the Christl-Alm smells of fresh baking, Bauernkrapfen (traditional fried dough pastries) are just coming out of the fat. The Neureiter family’s hut from St. Koloman has been there from the very beginning: since 1990, so for more than 35 years, it has been part of the Salzburg Christmas market at Mirabellplatz. Here we tell you what you’ll find at the Christl-Alm at the Christmas market and where the name comes from.

What is the Christl-Alm at the Christmas market? The Christl-Alm is a hut at the Christmas market at Mirabellplatz in Salzburg, serving Bauernkrapfen, Pofesen (fried bread slices filled with plum jam), Apfelradeln (apple rings fried in batter) and Glühwein (hot mulled wine, spiced with cinnamon, cloves and orange), and it has been part of our market for more than 35 years. It belongs to the Neureiter family, who run the Alm (high mountain pasture) of the same name on the Trattberg in St. Koloman.

You’ll find all the huts at our market further down.

What the Christl-Alm serves at the Salzburg Christmas market

At the Christl-Alm, “Grandma’s Bauernkrapfen and other delicious specialities are still made fresh on the spot with lots of love, just like in the old days” – that’s how the family describes its hut. On the menu:

  • Bauernkrapfen, baked fresh on the spot
  • Pofesen
  • Apfelradeln
  • Glühwein made to Grandpa Sepp’s old secret recipe
  • Glühmost (hot spiced cider)
  • Kinderpunsch (alcohol-free punch for children)

The family relies on regional ingredients and traditional recipes. On its page in our exhibitor overview, it sums up what makes the hut special in three words: “Charming. Warm-hearted. Genuine.”

Bauernkrapfen, Pofesen, Apfelradeln: what are they?

If you’re not from Salzburg, you won’t know all of these words:

  • Bauernkrapfen are a traditional yeast pastry fried in fat.
  • Pofesen are slices of white bread fried in fat, with a filling of plum purée (Zwetschkenmus).
  • Apfelradeln are apple rings dipped in batter and fried.

Everything else there is to eat at our market is in our guide to food at the Christmas market.

Who runs the hut today and when it’s here

Today, Josef and Florian Neureiter run the hut. If you fancy something savoury after the Krapfen, you’ll find Salzburger Brezen (Salzburg-style pretzels) at Alexander Reisinger’s.

According to its own website, the Christl-Alm is with us at Mirabellplatz during Advent from mid-November to 24 December.

The Alm on the Trattberg that gave the hut its name

The hut takes its name from the Christl-Alm on the Trattberg in St. Koloman in the Tennengau, around 30 kilometres south of Salzburg. According to the Alm’s website, it lies on a high plateau at an altitude of 1,500 metres and can be reached via a nine-kilometre panoramic road. On the 602-hectare high pasture, around 370 calves and 80 horses graze in summer.

Sepp and Beatrix Neureiter took over the Alm from Sepp’s mother in 1987. Until 1998 it was run purely as a working farm pasture, and in 2006 SalzburgerLand Tourism awarded it the “Salzburger Almsommer” label. From the end of May to the end of October, the Neureiters serve traditional Salzburg home cooking up there, and Sepp plays the Steirische Harmonika, a traditional button accordion from the Alpine region. During Advent, you’ll find the family down in the city with us.
