In the morning, regional bus 150 leaves Mirabellplatz towards Bad Ischl, and at 8.15 am the tour to Hallstatt sets off a few steps away. A Hallstatt day trip from Salzburg works well in winter if you plan around the short days. We at the Salzburg Christmas market at Mirabellplatz have put together how to get there, what’s open in December and when you’ll be back with us in the evening.
What is Hallstatt? Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage village on the Hallstätter See (Lake Hallstatt) in the Salzkammergut lake district of Upper Austria. The village centre is car-free for visitors, and the railway station is on the opposite shore of the lake; from there, a ferry takes you across to the village.
Opening hours and directions to our market for the evening are further down.
Hallstatt in winter: is a day trip from Salzburg worth it?
Yes, if you set off early. By bus and train, the journey takes just under two to two and a half hours each way until the timetable change on 13 December, depending on the connection. In December the sun sets in the Salzkammergut at around 4.15 pm, and it’s dark by around 4.50 pm. If you take one of the first buses from Mirabellplatz after 8 am, you’ll have a few hours of daylight in Hallstatt and be back in Salzburg in the early evening.
Bus 150 and bus or train: how to get there from Mirabellplatz
